As the sun rises
You are but a few
Delicate threads spun from a silk worm
Woven gently around and within
A nectarine cranium spool
The very first strands
Garnish a beginning

Recess finds you in braids
Multicolored scrunchies securely
Held in place by
Clips that glitter
With stars and smilies and hearts
Graying gum clings to you
From that moment under the desk
When a pencil had fallen

Afternoon shines on your mask
Once dark bark-colored
Now masquerading as blond
Credit the bleach
For helping you fit in
With a thousand fake smiles
At a sweet sixteen

Evening kisses what is left of you
Now shorter with chemical burns
Dye is the scar that marks trying
To cover the cement grey that has
Been painted above those ears
Like a cruel mockery
Of your former perfection

Midnight stars cast their souls
On you, their silver associate
You're bobbed and curled
No longer in connection with your sapling self
Time has slipped you
Into a chrome dream
Where you are just as beautiful
As always

Author's Comments

This poem is for :iconwriters-workshop: 's new workshop, hosted by :iconlamonaca: . It's a workshop on punctuating, or not punctuating, with purpose.

This poem is revised. Originally I had lots of punctuation and different words/wording in some places.

1. Do you usually punctuate your poetry? Why/why not? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I depends on the structure of the poem.
2. Are there lines in this poem where you were considering other punctuation (or no punctuation)? If so, what were you considering and why? This poem is something I wrote about 3 years ago originally. The original poem had lots of punctuation, some of which I originally intended to leave in, but in the end opted to cut out. I think I only left two punctuated areas in the this revised poem.
3. If this a new draft of an old poem, do you feel better about your choices this time, or do you feel as if you were forcing the punctuation use? I like the poem now with most of the punctuation cut out. I think it flows better when you read it aloud.
4. Overall, what is the effect you would like this poem to have on the reader? In other words, what are you going for, here? I just hope that the reader feels inspired to try to describe everyday things in more colorful language. It's a fun exercise, trying to create detailed images in someone's mind when dealing with a simple subject.

Can't say anything without gushing. It's awesome, and you know it's awesome. Or you should know. I may read it aloud to my siblings.
